I kept a paper diary for years before I ever built a digital one, so I've felt both sides of this honestly. The internet tends to frame it as a holy war — romantic notebook purists versus app-toting optimisers — but most of that argument is about the wrong thing. Here's what genuinely changes when you move journaling from paper to an app (or add AI to it), and, just as importantly, what doesn't.
What doesn't change: the part that actually helps you
Start here, because it reframes everything. The well-studied benefits of journaling — reduced anxiety and rumination, a bit more clarity — come from the act of writing honestly about your experience, not from the surface you write on. A review summarising over a decade of expressive-writing research found those benefits across studies, with the important caveat that effects aren't universal and can briefly increase distress before they settle.1
Notice what that research is not about: it's not about paper grain or app features. The medium is not the magic. Whichever tool gets you to sit down and write truthfully a few times a week is the tool that "works." Keep that as your tiebreaker for everything below.
What paper genuinely does better
- Focus. A notebook can't ping you. There's no notification, no other tab, no autocomplete finishing your thought. For a lot of people that quiet is the whole point.
- A different kind of brain engagement. A 2024 EEG study found that handwriting produced far more widespread brain connectivity than typing — 32 significant connectivity clusters during handwriting that typing didn't produce. The authors are careful, though: they measured brain activity during the act of writing single words, not long-term learning or wellbeing, with only 36 participants.2 So: handwriting is neurologically richer, but don't oversell it as "paper makes you happier." It's a real difference, honestly bounded.
- Privacy by default. What you write stays in a drawer, not on a server.
What an app genuinely does better
- It removes the blank page. A prompt waiting for you ("What challenged you today?") is the difference between writing and staring. Blank-page paralysis kills more journals than lack of discipline does.
- It remembers for you. Mood tracking turns scattered entries into a pattern you can actually see; search means you can find "that week in March" in two seconds; nothing is lost when a notebook is.
- Lower friction, more consistency. It's already in your pocket, so the entry happens on the bus instead of "tonight" (which never comes). Since consistency is what produces the benefit, this is a bigger deal than it sounds.
Where "AI" actually fits — and its two catches
This is the part worth slowing down for, because "AI journaling" is marketed hard right now. AI can generate fresh prompts, summarise long entries, and surface themes across months of writing. Genuinely useful. But there are two honest catches:
- Privacy. Your journal is the most private text you own. Routing it through an AI model means it leaves your device. That's a real trade, and "it's encrypted" is not the same as "no one and nothing ever reads it." Decide deliberately.
- Outsourced reflection. The benefit of journaling comes from you doing the processing. If an AI hands you the insight pre-chewed, you can skip the very work that helps — like reading the summary instead of the book. Used as a prompt-giver, AI helps; used as a feeling-interpreter, it can quietly replace the thing that was doing you good.

So don't pick based on which sounds more impressive. Pick based on the only thing the evidence cares about: which one will you actually keep doing? If that's a battered notebook, wonderful — keep it. If you need a prompt, your history in your pocket, and no excuse about a lost diary, a simple digital journal is the honest winner.
